One of the comments of industrialists is the extensive focus of industries in the capital. Many active professionals of different industries and from different provinces, have called for the decentralization of industrial endeavors from the capital. Their most important concern for this subject is to create job opportunities in provinces and motivate factories across the nation. This is also evident in the field of pharmaceuticals and although we are witnessing great pharmaceutical potentials in several provinces, the concentration in Tehran is still evident.

One of the main provinces in the country that has great potentials in pharmaceuticals is Isfahan. Adjacent to holding the 3rdInternational Exhibition on Pharmaceuticals and Related Industries IRANPHARMA EXPO 2017 in Tehran, many pharmaceutical industrialists in Isfahan, witnessed the capacity in their provinces to hold a similar exhibition in their province on a smaller scale. Without a doubt, and with regard to the major players of pharmaceutical industries in Isfahan, and also the academic activities in Isfahan’s pharmacy faculties, it is not unexpected for pharmaceutical exhibition in this province to be highly welcomed.

Holding pharmaceutical events in provinces such as Isfahan, not only has a great impact on the dynamism of scientific associations and pharmaceutical companies in this province, but also leads to the creation of job opportunities. As we all know, annual exhibition can create several job opportunities for industrialists and researchers. Therefore, exhibitions can be looked upon as potential job opportunities.

In a sense, pharmaceutical exhibitions in provinces is a form of entrepreneurship for further development of pharmaceutical industries. This also happens in several developed countries and we sometimes witness that exhibitions that are held in different states and cities of a country, are highly welcomed by pharmaceutical industries and this helps their pharmaceutical market to grow.

In export-oriented approaches, several factors are taken into consideration by professionals and experts for pharmaceuticals export development. Attention to the pharmaceutical manufacturing centers of the country is among the most important factors that the experts believe that increasing manufacturing capacity lies heavily on decentralization from Tehran and expanding and investing on new regions. Isfahan province is one of the manufacturing centers of pharmaceuticals and because of this province’s geopolitical status, it has turned into the basis for many industries.

Dr. Hossein Badakhshian, a pharmaceutical industrialist and CEO of one of the factories that are located in Isfahan believes that the strategic status of this province in providing for a notable portion of the national demands in pharmaceuticals is being neglected. In an exclusive interview with Food and Drug Magazine he stated that: “The presence of major companies in antibiotics, chemical and herbal medicine is an evidence of this statement.”

He continued: “Unfortunately, the same problem that occurs with other sectors of industry to Isfahan, has shadowed the pharmaceutical industry as well, and in contrast with the common impression that Isfahan is well provided for, in effect, Isfahan, with the shortcomings of the past few years, have turned into a poorly equipped province.

Isfahan, Ready to Receive Foreign Investment

Stressing on the platforms for domestic and foreign investments in the pharmaceutical industries, Badakhshian added that: “Decentralization of pharmaceuticals from Tehran and proper geographical distribution of the pharmaceutical industry must be a priority for government policies.”

Decentralization from Isfahan and lack of a pharmaceutical center deprives Isfahan from the advantages of centralization, localization and professionalism. These are factors that play important and effective roles in the growth and flourishing of an industry.

Therefore, it seems that the use of potentials in Isfahan for expanding exports and increasing the national manufacturing potential, needs the dedication of decision making bodies in this sector. The government must provide the needed grounds for expanding the potentials of the pharmaceutical industries and utilizing the capacities of pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmaceutical companies as major parts of the health system in all societies, play major roles. A look at the share of this industry in the GNP reveals the notable role of pharmaceutical industries in the national economy. According to experts, the pharmaceutical industry, is a future-oriented industry that has a special value in expanding non-petroleum exports, especially in a country like Iran.

Non-petroleum exports has always been among the most important concerns of the nation’s economic authorities and policy-makers and has attracted a special attention in the first, second and third development plans of the country. With regard to the 20 year perspective vision of Iran, non-petroleum exports must increase in a way that they lead to a decrease in the country’s reliance on oil exports. Therefore, the government must try and facilitate the active presence of exporters in global markets.

The statistics of pharmaceutical production in the country and the number of pharmacists show that the Iranian pharmaceutical industry, as one of the pioneering industries, plays an important role in expanding non-petroleum exports and attracting foreign investments.

According to the latest statistics released by the ministry of health and medical education, more than 97 percent of the domestic demand for pharmaceuticals is met by domestic production.

According to Dr. Abbas Kebriaeizade, professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Tehran, 35 percent of science is now created by pharmacists and chemists and more than 1000 professors are members of pharmacy faculties. By including the number of educated students of this field, which are estimated to be about 3000 students, it can be said that the highest rates of generating science is held by pharmacists.

However, the status quo shows the great distance we have from the realization of the expected plans. As some experts believe that finding bigger shares in global trades and leaps in non-petroleum exports, with regard to the experience of recently industrialized countries, including the countries of south-east Asia, is not that difficult. We must only change the rules of the game from inside to outside and pay special attention to the modern factors of exports development.
